The Final Heads-Up
Every decade has its sporting moments, when the underdog comes through to win at massive odds. In the 70's when Manchester Utd lost the FA Cup final to Southampton 1-0, what an upset. When Ulster lifted the Heineken trophy, again what an upset. When Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas in 1990, it was the biggest upset in the history of sports; Douglas was a 42 to 1 shot!
So in 2006 the bridge club truly witnessed another major upset, against all odds the cavalier Murry Bailey from Bangor defeated Paul Leckey to win his first major tournament!
Having been put under pressure during the first and second levels Murray had seen his chip stack dwindle to only 3000, however he remained best friends with the river and caught a well-needed Jack to get back in the match.

Players traded chips for the next few levels, the crucial hand had Paul raising Murray's big blind, Murray called to see a flop. The flop showed a King & two rags. Paul raised, Murray re-raised and Paul moved in, most players when holding pocket aces would call immediately, but not Murray. Possibly he was worried Paul had a hit a set or maybe he was enjoying a slow execution. The end results showed Murray's pocket rockets holding up against Paul's two kings.
Murray as the bridge club heads-up champion will travel to Barcelona to play in the worlds heads up championships on the 21st may, where he will stay at the exclusive 4 star Barcelona hotel and compete against 127 others for a share of the €320,000 prize pool.
Everyone from the Bridge Club would like to wish Murray good luck and success in the tournament and who knows if we might just see another major upset!
